To park my van in the dark beside a lake that I can’t see because tomorrow morning I’m inspecting some guys fields for a solar install. Also I called him to let him know when I’d be on-site “so no one is concerned or calls the police or anything” to which he replied “we don’t bother with the police around here.” So...it was nice knowing y’all.

Also, my campground host has this awesome mini truck that I hope I can see in daylight tomorrow.

Do you have window blockers or curtains for the van? Looks cozy!

I like to think it’s because he is just being pedantic and they don’t bother with the police because they are county (I assume) and they only deal with the sheriff’s office.

“we don’t bother with the police around here.”

You know you’re in the sticks when the sheriff tells you not to trespass or you’ll end up buried in the neighbors’ back 40 and he ain’t got the time to go diggin’

I do, but I’m literally the only person here so I didn’t bother. I’d rather wake up and see sunlight!

If the weather is tolerable. She’s indifferent to it and her kennel isn’t cheap, so why not?

I kind of laughed and said “please don’t shoot me either!” b ut he wasn’t laughing with me. I mean, I get it, but dude is selling out to solar farms and presumably wants the cash so just let me do my job.

It’s Shelly! I think she’s been on here a few times? She’s about 15, has three legs because of an osteosarcoma diagnosis once upon a time, and was given a 6-12 month life expectancy almost 3 years ago. I tried to add another pic to the post but I’m not sure it worked, so here’s a couple. She’s best friends with my 3-legged black and white cat.

Out here in the sticks you go say hello to people. If everything is cool there is no problem. You might get breakfast from the neighbors tomorrow. Nobody wants the cops around over stupid situations.

You might want to think about a camp stove a kettle/pot and a french press if you find yourself in this situation often.  If you get a backpacking kit it can all pack down into a single pot too.

Right? I certainly see plenty of places that live by that but there’s no way to avoid sounding at least a little threatening saying it to a stranger. But knowing that, I’m wearing ALL THE FLUORESCENT SAFETY GEAR tomorrow. When they eventually find   neon yellow and orange threads in the bullet holes they’ll know it was deliberate.

I have allllll the camp stoves. I’ve used backpacking ones for forever and was shocked - SHOCKED, I tell you - to discover how nice a regular Coleman stove is when it’s windy. Life changing. (One came with the van).

I should find a plastic French press for the van too, but the basket of my Chinesium single cup coffee pot does a better pour over than electric  drip brew.

Yeah the coleman stoves are nearly indestructible and perform quite well. They’re not light, but they’re simple. I t is kind of a pain to carry a can of white gas though instead of a propane canister.

That being said when car camping a coleman white gas stove and lantern are what go with me.

Fun and compl etely useless factoid: the length of the song is exa c tly how long  it takes the International Space Station to travel 1000 miles.

Which I’m sure is faster than you did your 750.

Thanks, XKCD , you broke my brain again.

The machete is from the most densely vegetated property I’ve ever been to (in Iowa). I’ve run into some strange characters on some wooded sites and now it comes with me if we see camps on an aerial photo. It’s legitimately useful but also...keeps people six feet or so away. Obviously not a huge amount of protection but keeps the spontaneous, opportunistic types  at bay.

I used to do the French press thing whenever I ended up off-grid, but I’m all in Starbucks Via now. It’s perfectly acceptable instant coffee. If you can heat water on a camp stove having a few Via packs around saves a lot of space and fuss - especially the cleanup - compared to a French press.

My buddy with the farm was having trouble with some kids partying on the lower 20 acres. After they broke down his gate the third time, he made it known that he planned to shoot first and ask questions later the next time it happened. To drive the point home, he spent an afternoon emptying brass from his back porch. As happens in the country, word gets around and he hasn’t had a trespasser since.
